Explorers, Scouts, Cubs and Beavers joined in JOTI 2008 between 9am to 9am at 1st Crowborough Scout HQ on Saturday 18th October 2008. All the 30 computers were in use for the whole 24 hours. They talked to Beavers, Cubs, Scouts, Explorers and Leaders from all over the world! The Scouts and Explorers did JOTI though the night 9pm to 9am. We used Google Earth for location identification.

We had a live web cam.
We also had a web page with live updates.
It counted towards Beaver, Cub or  Scout Global Challenge awards.
If they already knew a foreign language then it counted towards the Interpreter Badge.
Some Scouts also designed thier own web pages.

Great to see so many kids from all sections really interacting with people around the globe. Just goes to prove the event is not really about sitting in front of computers more than using them as a conduit for communication to the rest of the world!! Grant-Kerwin-Nye
Yet again the energy you have Martyn was infectious and the Beavers, Cubs, Scouts and Explorers really enjoyed themselves.  I'd also like to thank Ann who kept Martyn on the straight and narrow, Oli, Sam, Chris for getting everything sorted and to Grant for expertise and equipment supply.  I have been to the Mountain Bike challenge today and a number of people from around the district were really impressed; understandably.  They commented on how professional the set up was.  It wasn't just a few Commodore 64's and an extension lead!  With the live web cam, google earth and at least 30 pc's, some with flat screens, everyone had an opportunity to communicate with other members of scouting across the Globe...terrific.  Again, well done though this time to all; a real team effort, cheers!

Many Thanks

Internet jamboree for Scouts

SCOUTS from 45 countries were virtually in Crowborough recently for a jamboree. The 1st Crowborough Scouts were taking part in a worldwide Jamboree On The Internet, or JOTI. The headquarters on Whitehill Road was full of computers, wires and webcams as Scouts, Cubs and Beavers chatted to their counterparts across the globe.
They exchanged ideas for games and experiences of scouting in Crowborough with young people as far away as Australia.
Martyn Everitt, a leader at 1st Crowborough, said: "It was a tremendous success. We counted 94 people come along to the event during the 24 hours and we visited a very large number of countries. "We had people from Uckfield Scouts come up as well and they were impressed with it."
Mr Everitt said the Scouts used the event as "a fantastic opportunity to chat" to others from all over the world and "learn what they do in Scouting".
He said there were similarities, but for different reasons, for example both Scouts in Crowborough and in Australia took tents when they went camping, the Crowborough Scouts because of the weather, the Australians because of the bugs.
The Crowborough contingent, which celebrates its 100th year this year, also man aged to make contact with people in Shanghai. The troop is going to China next year and Mr Everitt said he thought they would be somewhat of a novelty there, as the country did not officially recognise scouting.
