Muddy Wide Boot Game Hike Event Factsheet

When: 12th February 2011

Where: Area to the east of Gill’s Lap, Ashdown Forest

Arrive: 3pm at your allocated car park (see ‘Arrival’ section below)

Finish: 7:15pm back at the same car park

Cost: Łnone

Overview

• A team challenge run by Explorer Scouts and their leaders for all Ashdown District Scouts. The event will

combine day and night navigation with fun teamwork games and challenges at a series of bases within a

defined area of the Forest (as shown on the map, on page 2). Teams of between 4 and 7 Scouts will navigate

out from the ‘Hub’ to allocated bases to complete their challenges, returning to the Hub in between each one in

order to be assigned their next ‘mission’.

• The event will start in daylight and teams will need to take advantage of this to orientate themselves before

darkness falls. Points will be scored at each of the bases – both for getting there and for completing the

challenge set by the Explorer Scouts at each one. A strict time limit will be imposed, after which all teams must

return to the Hub and no more points can be gained, apart from a possible tiebreak bonus challenge.

• Hot drinks and refreshments will be available at The Hub from around 5pm onwards.

• There will be no physical contact between any of the teams. Apart from this, the only rules are to stay within

the defined game area and to follow the footpaths and tracks within this area rather than rampaging across

open ground. Scout Leaders will be patrolling the game area to ensure that the rules are followed.

Equipment Required

• Warm clothes, a woolly hat, gloves, full waterproofs (cagoule and overtrousers) and hike boots, wellies or old,

stout shoes. (NO denim jeans, and no trainers, sandals, high heels, flip-flops or other unsuitable footwear!)

• Each Scout should also have a Torch with spare batteries and a Whistle

• Each TEAM should also be provided (by their Troop) with at least one high visibility jacket, at least one

compass and one waterproof map case containing a copy of the map on Page 2.

Arrival Please arrive promptly at 3pm

• Scouts from Rotherfield, Mayfield and Uckfield should arrive at the ‘Four Counties’ car park, on the B2026 to

the south of Gill’s Lap (grid reference 468 311).

• Scouts from Hartfield, Groombridge, Crowborough and Wadhurst/Ticehurst should arrive at the Gill’s Lap

car park, where Kidd’s Hill meets the B2026 (grid reference 467 315)

Upon arrival, ALL Scouts must report to their own Troop Leader, within the car park.

• When everyone from a particular troop has arrived, the leader should divide them into teams of 4 to 7 Scouts

and escort them across the road to the Hub No Scouts must cross the road without adult supervision.

• At the Hub, leaders will need to register both the teams and the adults with the event organisers.

• A briefing will be given once everyone has assembled.

Finish Parents should return to the same car park at 7:15pm

• The game will end at 7pm. All teams should then return to the Hub and report to their own Troop Leader

• Hot drinks will be available and final scores will be announced.

• Leaders should then escort all of their Scouts back to the relevant car park, from where they can be collected

by parents from about 7:15 to 7:30pm

Emergency Contacts

• Each Troop should operate its normal ‘in touch’ (home contact) system.

• In case of emergency, the event organisers can be contacted as follows:

Muddy Wide Boot Game Hike (Saturday 4th December 2010).  This event, which merges the fabled Muddy Boot Hike with the usual District Widegame will begin at 3pm at one of two car parks (Gills Lap and Four Counties) on Ashdown Forest and will finish at or before 7pm.  Further details and a map will be issued, hopefully next weekend, but the basics are that the game will be partly a navigation exercise (in daylight to begin with but mostly after dark), in which Scout Teams have to find bases, run by Explorer Scouts, at which they will have to complete a series of entertaining challenges.  Unlike previous wide games there will be no element of evading capture, although Scout Leaders will be patrolling the game area and may deduct points from teams who stray from the obvious tracks (the conservators have asked us to stick to the tracks but there are plenty of them!).  The team which successfully reaches the most bases in the time allowed will be the winner.
