"Thanks very much for an excellent adventure on the Overland. All the Crowborough parents were very proud, especially as the boys were so young."
"just to say thank you so much for getting me to all the training sessions for the overland and sorting so much of it out. I had a great weekend doing the actual event and I would have never had got there without the help of you! Thanks!"
"Many congratulations to you all. It goes to show that Ashdown District are one of the best if not the best hikers in the two counties."

Overland Training in West Sussex.
Two day Expedition Training expedition in South Harting - West Dean area, including camping cooking under “Overland” conditions. 35km over 2 days, 10kg pack (including tents).
The Crowborough teams training did extremely well, there was a very competitive spirit with teams overtaking others frequently.
They demonstrated a high degree of confidence in navigation with relatively few errors. The camping skills were good.
The 2 teams proved they were capable of putting strong teams into the Overland in two weeks time. Ping has amazed everyone with his enthusiasm and stamina.

Scout Overland Training on the 3rd March 2007 on the South Downs, Patching - Storrington - Amberley area, West Sussex. 25km, 10kg pack. All the 10 teams training did remarkably well and all teams improved their skills with the challenging navigation.

29 Scouts from Groombridge, Southon, Alpha, Phoenix, Wadhurst and Mayfield hiked 16km on a circuit over the South Downs between Kingston and Woodingdean,
with 7kg rucksacks on a (literally) brilliant "summer's day" with clear skies and fantastic views across to Firle Beacon, Mount Caburn and Lewes.

20th January 2007: 9 Overland teams (35 scouts and 12 adults) trained in windy but dry conditions.
All the teams kept a good pace and all the shadowing adults reported the navigation was to a high standard.
The walking through the deep yucky mud was the most memorable experience the teams experienced.
Thanks to all the leaders and parents who supported a very successful day. Everyone was looking forward to next weeks Devils Dyke hike.

14th January 2007:  thirty six Scouts from six different troops in Ashdown District took part in the first of this year's Overland Training sessions - learning how to read maps and use compasses - on a brilliantly sunny winters' day on Ashdown Forest. In a marked contrast to recent years, only a handful of these Scouts were experienced 'Overlanders'. Most were having a go at this for the first time and there is therefore plenty of scope for other first timers from the same and other troops to join in during the coming weeks.

If you are new to all of this, and/or if the rest of your Troop aren't involved, just click here for further information, then tell your Troop leader that you'd like to have a go. You don't need to be in a team at this stage, so it is OK for just one or two individual Scouts from a troop take part in the training.

Those who turned up this week benefited from being taught in small groups how to squeeze the maximum possible information out of their maps and compasses, so as to improve their chances of knowing where they are. Most of them also learnt the benefits of being able to follow footpaths accurately on their maps, rather than simply following a compass bearing in a straight line across rough terrain (almost always a slower and wetter option, especially on Ashdown Forest!).

Next week hike starts and finishes at Ditchling Beacon on the South Downs. You need to be there by 9 am after meeting up first at your own HQ's at 8:am. Detailed information regarding the route will be sent by email to all leaders, and you should contact them, in the first instance if you have any queries. The leader in overall charge of that session will be Martyn Everitt.

Troop Leaders, please note that it is ESSENTIAL, from next week onwards that all those turning up are properly equipped. This means each of your Scouts having everything listed on page 6 of the Overland Booklet (except sleeping bags), together with the team equipment provided by you (as listed here).

IN THE INTERESTS OF THEIR OWN SAFETY, ANY SCOUTS TURNING UP WITHOUT ALL OF THE NECESSARY CLOTHING AND EQUIPMENT WILL BE SENT HOME BEFORE THE HIKE BEGINS

On 6th January 2007 over 50 of us went on a Fun Hike in preparation for Overland training, Exceat to Westdean, through Friston forest to East Dean (Tiger Inn), down the Birling Gap then over the 8 Seven Sisters (yes 8 we counted them!), down to the beach and then up the Cuckmere Valley back to Exceat. 10 Southon Scouts went and we have around a dozen wanting to take part this year.
